R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The life of a beloved member of the University of |
|
Texas sports community drew to a close with the passing of William |
|
Lynn Little on August 18, 2023, at the age of 81; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Winters on May 14, 1942, Bill Little was the |
|
son of W. E. "Eddie" and Ida Little, and he grew up with the |
|
companionship of his brother, Harvey; a Longhorn fan from an early |
|
age, he went on to attend The University of Texas at Austin, where |
|
he was sports editor of The Daily Texan; following his graduation in |
|
1964, he worked at the Austin American-Statesman and in Oklahoma |
|
City for the Associated Press; and |
|
WHEREAS, At the age of 26, Mr. Little was hired by Longhorn |
|
football coach Darrell K Royal to join the UT athletic department; |
|
over the course of a decorated tenure that spanned more than 50 |
|
years, he served in a variety of capacities, including as sports |
|
information director, assistant athletic director for external |
|
communications, and head of communications for football coach Mack |
|
Brown; a gifted storyteller in many mediums, he was an |
|
award-winning columnist, the public address announcer at Texas |
|
football games, the radio broadcaster for the baseball and men's |
|
and women's basketball teams, and the author or co-author of nine |
|
books about UT athletics; in 2014, the university's football and |
|
baseball press boxes were both named in his honor; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Little was widely respected in the sports |
|
information and journalism communities; he served his profession as |
|
president of the College Sports Information Directors of America, |
|
and the organization honored him with its Lifetime Achievement |
|
Award in 2016; in all his endeavors, he enjoyed the love and support |
|
of his wife of 45 years, Kim Scofield; he took great pride in his |
|
three children, Bobby, David, and Elle, and his 10 grandchildren, |
|
Justin, Ty, Cole, Sunny, Sam, Ashley, Sarah, Jacob, Luke, and |
|
Courtney; and |
|
WHEREAS, A true Longhorn legend, Bill Little was beloved for |
|
his charm, his wisdom, and his generosity of spirit, and those who |
|
were fortunate enough to know him will always remember him with |
|
great affection and admiration; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |
|
of William Lynn Little and extend heartfelt sympathy to all who |
|
mourn his passing; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bill |
|
Little. |
