SENATE RESOLUTION
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
commemorates the life of Walker Eugene Hunt, who died September |
|
1, 2023, at the age of 86; and |
|
WHEREAS, Gene Hunt was born on June 7, 1937, in Luling to a |
|
family of sharecroppers; a brilliant and determined young man, |
|
Gene earned bachelor's and master's degrees in pure mathematics |
|
from The University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a |
|
doctorate of philosophy in mathematics from his alma mater in |
|
1979; and |
|
WHEREAS, A man of exemplary courage and integrity, Gene |
|
was one of the first African American scholars to graduate from |
|
The University of Texas at Austin with an advanced degree, and |
|
his hard work and perseverance served as sources of inspiration |
|
to other African American students aspiring to higher education |
|
and to overcome the vestiges of segregation; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Hunt served as a part-time instructor at |
|
Huston-Tillotson College and as a visiting professor at Prairie |
|
View A&M College before initiating his successful career as a |
|
full-time professor in the Mathematics, Architecture, Physics |
|
and Engineering Department at San Antonio College, where he |
|
instructed and mentored students for 57 years; and |
|
WHEREAS, A dedicated educator who upheld the highest |
|
values of pedagogy, Dr. Hunt was beloved and respected by his |
|
colleagues and associates for his commitment to nurturing young |
|
minds; he was an avid sports fan and an enthusiastic reader and |
|
student of art history, and his insatiable intellectual |
|
curiosity served as an encouragement to others to pursue and |
|
esteem knowledge; and |
|
WHEREAS, He was a devoted brother to his siblings and a |
|
true friend to all those whose lives he touched; Dr. Hunt will |
|
long be remembered for his wisdom and generosity, and his memory |
|
will be forever cherished by his family and his students and by |
|
all who were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be |
|
it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
|
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend sincere |
|
condolences to the bereaved family of Walker Eugene Hunt; and, be |
|
it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an |
|
expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate and that |
|
when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Gene |
|
Hunt. |
