R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The Eddie Durham Jazz Fest took place in San Marcos |
|
on October 21, 2023; and |
|
WHEREAS, A native of San Marcos, the late Eddie Durham was a |
|
gifted jazz guitarist, trombonist, composer, and arranger who |
|
attained great success in the 1930s and 1940s, during the swing era; |
|
he is credited with being the first person to record an amplified |
|
guitar and pioneered the use of the electric guitar in jazz music; |
|
moreover, his skill in writing and arranging music contributed to |
|
the careers of such iconic artists as Glen Miller, Bennie Moten, |
|
Count Basie, and Jimmie Lunceford; and |
|
WHEREAS, Hosted by the Calaboose African American History |
|
Museum, the 2023 Eddie Durham Jazz Fest featured a free concert |
|
hosted by Kory Cook, the managing director of jazz station |
|
KRTU 91.7 in San Antonio; performers included the Texas State Jazz |
|
Ensemble, the Central Texas Women of Jazz, Indigo Soul with Sonia |
|
Love, Morris Nelms and the Calaboose Players, and the Joe Morales |
|
Quartet; and |
|
WHEREAS, Through his many contributions to the jazz genre, |
|
Eddie Durham played an important role in the rich musical heritage |
|
of the Lone Star State, and the Eddie Durham Jazz Fest is a fitting |
|
tribute to his proud legacy; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby commemorate the 2023 Eddie |
|
Durham Jazz Fest and extend to all those associated with the event |
|
sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the Calaboose African American History Museum as an |
|
expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
