A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to the provision in the Nepali language of application |
|
forms and an alternate examination for a driver's license. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 521, Transportation Code, |
|
is amended by adding Section 521.015 to read as follows: |
|
Sec. 521.015. LICENSE APPLICATION AND FORMS IN NEPALI. The |
|
department shall provide in Nepali: |
|
(1) the application form for an original or renewal |
|
driver's license; and |
|
(2) all other forms required under Subchapter G for an |
|
application for an original or renewal driver's license. |
|
SECTION 2. Subchapter H, Chapter 521, Transportation Code, |
|
is amended by adding Section 521.1621 to read as follows: |
|
Sec. 521.1621. ALTERNATE EXAMINATION IN NEPALI. (a) The |
|
department shall design and administer in each county of this state |
|
an alternate examination for Nepali-speaking applicants who are |
|
unable to take the regular examination in English. |
|
(b) The alternate examination must be identical to the |
|
examination administered to other applicants under Section 521.161 |
|
except that all directions and written material, other than the |
|
text of highway signs, must be in Nepali. The text of highway signs |
|
must be in English. |
|
SECTION 3. Section 521.1621, Transportation Code, as added |
|
by this Act, applies only to an application for a driver's license |
|
that is filed on or after the effective date of this Act. An |
|
application that was filed before the effective date of this Act is |
|
subject to the law in effect immediately before the effective date |
|
of this Act, and the former law is continued in effect for that |
|
purpose. |
|
SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
