A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 
AN ACT
  relating to the minimum duration of a protective order.
         BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
         SECTION 1.  Section 85.025(a), Family Code, is amended to
  read as follows:
         (a)  Except as otherwise provided by this section, an order
  under this subtitle is effective:
               (1)  for a [the] period of not less than six months and
  not more than two years stated in the order [, not to exceed two
  years]; or
               (2)  if a period is not stated in the order, until the
  second anniversary of the date the order was issued.
         SECTION 2.  The change in law made by this Act applies only
  to a protective order rendered on or after the effective date of
  this Act. A protective order rendered before the effective date of
  this Act is governed by the law in effect on the date the order was
  rendered, and the former law is continued in effect for that
  purpose.
         SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
