A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to required notice to high school students and parents or |
|
|
guardians regarding a student's receipt of certain awards, |
|
|
recognitions, and scholarship opportunities. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 28, Education Code, is |
|
|
amended by adding Section 28.0261 to read as follows: |
|
|
Sec. 28.0261. NOTIFICATION OF AWARDS, RECOGNITIONS, AND |
|
|
SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES. The board of trustees of a school |
|
|
district and the governing body of an open-enrollment charter |
|
|
school shall notify each high school student enrolled at the |
|
|
district or school and the student's parent or guardian as soon as |
|
|
practicable after the school receives information indicating that |
|
|
the student: |
|
|
(1) has earned an award or recognition; or |
|
|
(2) is eligible for a scholarship opportunity as a |
|
|
result of the student's achievement, including the student's |
|
|
qualification for the National Merit Scholarship Program. |
|
|
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2023-2024 |
|
|
school year. |
|
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
