A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to a study by the Texas Education Agency on Asian American |
|
and Pacific Islander students enrolled in public schools. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. DEFINITION. In this Act, "agency" means the |
|
Texas Education Agency. |
|
SECTION 2. STUDY REGARDING ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC |
|
ISLANDER STUDENTS. (a) The agency shall conduct a study regarding |
|
students enrolled in public primary and secondary schools in this |
|
state that identify as Asian American or Pacific Islander. |
|
(b) The study must: |
|
(1) identify the number of students enrolled in public |
|
primary and secondary schools that identify as Asian American or |
|
Pacific Islander and assess the students' English language |
|
abilities; |
|
(2) identify any areas in which the needs of Asian |
|
American or Pacific Islander students are not addressed; and |
|
(3) assess whether schools are allocated sufficient |
|
resources to address the needs of Asian American or Pacific |
|
Islander students. |
|
(c) In conducting the study, the agency may solicit input |
|
from parents or guardians, students, teachers, administrators, and |
|
school support staff. |
|
SECTION 3. REPORT TO LEGISLATURE. Not later than December |
|
1, 2024, the agency shall prepare and submit to the legislature a |
|
report on the results of the study conducted under Section 2 of this |
|
Act and any recommendations for legislative or other action. |
|
SECTION 4. EXPIRATION OF ACT. This Act expires September 1, |
|
2025. |
|
SECTION 5. EFFECTIVE DATE. This Act takes effect |
|
immediately if it receives a vote of two-thirds of all the members |
|
elected to each house, as provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas |
|
Constitution. If this Act does not receive the vote necessary for |
|
immediate effect, this Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
