R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Jamie Padgett of Rice University is being presented
  with the Edith and Peter O'Donnell Award in Engineering from the
  Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering, Science and Technology in
  May 2023; and
         WHEREAS, Established in 2006, the O'Donnell Awards annually
  recognize Texas-based researchers who are addressing the essential
  role that science and technology play in society, and whose work
  meets the highest standards of professional performance,
  creativity, and resourcefulness; honorees are selected in five
  categories, medicine, engineering, biological sciences, physical
  sciences, and technology innovation, and each award includes a
  $25,000 honorarium as well as an invitation to present at TAMEST's
  annual conference; and
         WHEREAS, Jamie Padgett is being recognized for her lifesaving
  research in infrastructure sustainability and resiliency in
  hazard-prone regions; her work focuses on identifying and
  minimizing the risks that natural disasters and other hazards pose
  to critical infrastructure, such as highways and industrial
  facilities, and it has played an instrumental role in improving
  public safety in communities across Texas and beyond; and
         WHEREAS, A skilled educator, Ms. Padgett is the Stanley C.
  Moore Professor in Engineering and chair of the Department of Civil
  and Environmental Engineering at Rice University; she has further
  distinguished herself as a Fellow of the Structural Engineering
  Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers and as a
  founding chair of the organization's technical committee on
  multiple hazard mitigation; moreover, she served on the ASCE
  reconnaissance team that assessed damage caused by Hurricane
  Katrina, and she has represented the United States at the National
  Academy of Engineering China-America Frontiers of Engineering
  Symposium in China; and
         WHEREAS, Jamie Padgett's important research efforts have
  made a lasting, positive impact in her field, and she is truly
  deserving of this prestigious honor; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Jamie Padgett on her receipt of the
  Edith and Peter O'Donnell Award in Engineering from the Texas
  Academy of Medicine, Engineering, Science and Technology and extend
  to her sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Padgett as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
