R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to |
|
a close with the passing of Cruz Reyes Hinojosa Sr. of Houston on |
|
February 4, 2023, at the age of 89; and |
|
WHEREAS, The son of Luis and Cipriana Hinojosa, Cruz Hinojosa |
|
was born on May 3, 1933, in Lawton, Oklahoma, and he grew up in the |
|
Second Ward of Houston with his five siblings, Jim, Louis, Ray, |
|
Minnie, and Viola; he attended Sam Houston High School, where he was |
|
quarterback of the football team; and |
|
WHEREAS, On March 2, 1952, Mr. Hinojosa married the love of |
|
his life, Susie, and they were blessed with nine children, Cruz, |
|
Joe, Sylvia, Damian, Susie, Thomas, John, Sarah, and Michael; with |
|
the passing years, he had the pleasure of seeing his family grow to |
|
include 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Hinojosa valiantly served his country as a |
|
member of the U.S. Air Force; during his 21 years in uniform, he was |
|
stationed in locations around the globe, including Alaska, Germany, |
|
and Thailand; following his retirement, he returned to Houston and |
|
became a purchasing agent for Texas Southern University; and |
|
WHEREAS, A leader in inner-city Houston, Mr. Hinojosa took an |
|
active role in politics and served as a community development |
|
commissioner and precinct judge; he was instrumental in the |
|
renovation of Eastwood Park and the development of the Flores |
|
Neighborhood Library, and he spent years coaching baseball, |
|
softball, and basketball; he was also active in such organizations |
|
as the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the Knights of Columbus |
|
Council No. 7230; in his leisure time, he enjoyed singing and |
|
dancing, and he played a variety of sports throughout his life; and |
|
WHEREAS, Deeply dedicated to his family, his faith, and his |
|
community, Cruz Hinojosa earned the lasting respect and admiration |
|
of all who were privileged to know him, and he will be fondly |
|
remembered and deeply missed; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Cruz Reyes Hinojosa |
|
Sr. and extend sincere condolences to his relatives and friends; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Cruz |
|
Hinojosa. |
