R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The Houston Independent School District is marking
  the 100th anniversary of its founding in 2023; and
         WHEREAS, A free secondary school system was created in the
  area in 1877, and it became the Houston Independent School District
  in 1923; the district expanded its reach four years later, founding
  a community college which subsequently became the University of
  Houston; it also established one of the nation's first high schools
  for health professions; and
         WHEREAS, Today, Houston ISD serves nearly 190,000 students at
  274 campuses; it is the largest school district in Texas and the
  eighth largest in the nation, and it has taken in students from
  other areas over the years, including those displaced by Hurricane
  Katrina; the district offers 128 magnet programs focused on
  science, college and career, fine arts, and language immersion; in
  recognition of its substantial gains in student achievement, it won
  the Broad Prize for Urban Education in 2002 and 2013; and
         WHEREAS, Houston ISD benefits from the able leadership of its
  board of directors and its current superintendent, Dr. Rod Paige;
  with 27,000 employees, the district is one of the largest employers
  in Houston; and
         WHEREAS, For the past century, Houston ISD has provided
  generations of young Texans with a strong foundation on which to
  build, and it is indeed a privilege to join in marking this
  important milestone in its rich history; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Houston
  Independent School District and extend to all those associated with
  the district sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Houston ISD as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
