R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The Galveston Independent School District and its |
|
board of trustees are rededicating Tor Baseball Field in honor of |
|
civic leader Roger "Bo" Quiroga at a ceremony on March 24, 2023; and |
|
WHEREAS, Located on Galveston Island at 83rd Street and |
|
Stewart Road, the field is home to the Ball High School baseball |
|
team, and its renaming is an especially fitting tribute to |
|
Mr. Quiroga, who was a star pitcher for the Golden Tornadoes and |
|
helped the team advance to the state playoffs in 1971; later that |
|
year, he was drafted by the Washington Senators in the first round |
|
of the Major League Baseball amateur draft; over the course of his |
|
career, he played in 77 games with the Pulaski Phillies, |
|
Spartanburg Phillies, and Rocky Mount Phillies before his |
|
retirement in 1975; and |
|
WHEREAS, A Galveston native, Mr. Quiroga went on to |
|
distinguish himself as a committed champion for his community, most |
|
notably during his three terms as the city's mayor; he took office |
|
in 1998 and continued to serve until 2004, when he concluded his |
|
tenure due to term limits; and |
|
WHEREAS, The rededication of the Ball High baseball field |
|
will establish a lasting and well-deserved monument to an esteemed |
|
citizen, and it is a privilege to join in commending Mr. Quiroga for |
|
his achievements and his commitment to Galveston ISD and the |
|
residents of Galveston; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the renaming of Tor Baseball Field |
|
in honor of Roger "Bo" Quiroga and extend to all those attending the |
|
ceremony sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable event; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Quiroga as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
