R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Rice University alumna Germaine Franco has reached a
  new milestone in her career by winning the 2023 Grammy Award for
  Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Franco received this prestigious accolade for
  her work as the composer for the Disney film Encanto, which also
  garnered her a nomination for an Academy Award in the Best Original
  Score category, a first for a Latina; in addition to composing, she
  provided keyboard and both Latin and orchestral percussion on the
  film's score; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Franco studied percussion at Rice University's
  Shepherd School of Music, earning a bachelor's degree in 1984 and a
  master's in 1987; the following year, she moved to Los Angeles,
  where she has established a successful career as a composer,
  songwriter, and orchestrator; she has performed with a number of
  major international orchestras and artists and worked on media
  projects ranging from studio blockbusters and television series to
  documentaries and immersive attractions; moreover, she became the
  first woman to score a Disney film with her work on Coco, and she was
  the first Latina invited to join the music branch of the Academy of
  Motion Picture Arts and Sciences; a Sundance Film Music and Sound
  Design Lab Fellow, she has received a Shirley Walker Award from the
  American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers and has been
  featured in the film Women Who Score; and
         WHEREAS, Through her skill as a musician and composer,
  Germaine Franco has made valuable contributions to the music
  industry, and she is indeed deserving of this most recent honor;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Germaine Franco on winning a 2023
  Grammy Award and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued
  success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Franco as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
