R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, All who shared in the life of Mary Cunningham |
|
Johnston of San Antonio were deeply saddened by her passing on |
|
December 14, 2022, at the age of 77; and |
|
WHEREAS, The daughter of George and Georgia Genevieve |
|
Cunningham, the former "Sue" Cunningham was born in San Antonio on |
|
June 13, 1945, and she grew up in Uvalde with the companionship of |
|
her older sister, Barbara Jane; after graduating from high school, |
|
she attended The University of Texas at Austin, where she was a |
|
member of Alpha Delta Pi; on a blind date at Crider's Rodeo & |
|
Dancehall in Hunt, she met her future husband, Wayne Johnston, who |
|
was drafted and deployed to Germany in 1966, during the Vietnam War; |
|
the couple exchanged wedding vows on November 7, 1968, in |
|
Baumholder, Germany, and they went on to share 54 years of marriage |
|
before his passing in July 2022; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Johnstons returned to Texas shortly after their |
|
wedding and settled in Lubbock; Mrs. Johnston went on to earn a |
|
master's degree in education from Texas Tech University and began |
|
her teaching career at Slaton Elementary School; in 1973, the |
|
couple moved to San Antonio, where she taught at Clear Spring |
|
Elementary School for more than a decade; she left the field of |
|
education in 1985 and became a certified travel agent, which |
|
enabled the family to travel around the world; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnston was the loving mother of two children, |
|
Jamie Lynn and Wayne Bryson, and with the passing years, she had the |
|
privilege of seeing her family grow to include two grandchildren, |
|
Benton and Jack; she delighted in celebrating special occasions |
|
with her loved ones and in creating a happy, comforting, and |
|
welcoming home for her family, her friends, and her two loyal dogs, |
|
Petey and Ryder; moreover, she was a valued member of Northwood |
|
Presbyterian Church, and in her leisure time, she enjoyed arts and |
|
crafts; and |
|
WHEREAS, Although Sue Johnston will be greatly missed, she |
|
has left her family and friends with a wealth of memories that they |
|
will forever cherish; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Mary Cunningham |
|
Johnston and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn her |
|
passing; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Sue |
|
Johnston. |
