R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters of Richardson is
  presenting candidate forums on April 17 and 20, 2023, in advance of
  the May 6 general election; and
         WHEREAS, The organization is partnering with the Richardson
  Independent School District on April 17 for a public discussion
  among candidates for two contested school board races; the group is
  coordinating with the City of Richardson to host its April 20 event,
  which will provide an opportunity to hear from candidates for the
  mayoral seat and three of six city council seats; and
         WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters was formed in 1920 with
  the merger of the National Council of Women Voters and the National
  American Women's Suffrage Association; its initial aim was to
  assist newly enfranchised women seeking to exercise their right to
  vote; as a nonpartisan, grassroots organization, it strives to
  empower citizens of all backgrounds to participate in the political
  sphere, and it has widened its vision to foster a more inclusive
  democracy in which all Americans can see themselves represented in
  our government; and
         WHEREAS, Chartered in 1962, the Richardson chapter works
  tirelessly to provide election information to voters through
  nonpartisan voters guides as well as candidate forums; it also
  conducts voter registration drives and produces a local Guide to
  Elected Officials; in addition, it studies public policy issues,
  such as land use, education, public health services, and the local
  city charter, and develops a consensus; it has championed many
  reforms over the years, from unified polling places and televised
  city council meetings to better regulation of child care
  facilities, expansion of city parks, and inclusion in the Dallas
  Area Rapid Transit Rail System; and
         WHEREAS, An informed citizenry is vital to the continued
  strength of our democracy, and for more than six decades, the League
  of Women Voters of Richardson has helped area residents gain the
  knowledge and insight required to participate more meaningfully in
  our electoral process; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
  Legislature hereby honor the League of Women Voters of Richardson
  on the occasion of its April 2023 candidate forums and extend to its
  members sincere best wishes for continued success in their
  important endeavors; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
