R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Teaching is a profession that calls for character, |
|
passion, and commitment, and James Newland of Bellaire High School |
|
in the Houston Independent School District has demonstrated these |
|
qualities in abundance throughout his nearly 27-year career with |
|
the school; and |
|
WHEREAS, Jimmy Newland first joined the staff of Bellaire |
|
High in 1996, and over the course of his exemplary tenure, he has |
|
taught a range of subjects, including computer science, astronomy, |
|
and physics; in addition, he served as the school's first IT |
|
director; and |
|
WHEREAS, Currently teaching International Baccalaureate |
|
astronomy and Advanced Placement physics, Mr. Newland is known for |
|
fostering an engaging environment in the classroom and for going |
|
above and beyond in his role as an educator; he hosts star parties |
|
with the Astronomy Club and sponsors three different clubs that |
|
encourage students to pursue careers in STEM; furthermore, he gives |
|
generously of his time helping students with internship |
|
applications; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Newland holds a bachelor's degree from the |
|
University of Houston, and in 2019, he embarked on a journey to |
|
obtain his Ph.D. in science education; his studies focus on the |
|
incorporation of computational thinking into the field of physics; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, The influence of an educator extends far beyond the |
|
walls of the classroom and the duration of the school year, and |
|
Jimmy Newland has worked to instill in his students a lifelong love |
|
of learning that will serve them well in every aspect of their |
|
lives; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor James Newland for his exemplary service to |
|
Bellaire High School and extend to him sincere best wishes for |
|
continued success with his important work; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Newland as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
