H.R. No. 1545

R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, IgA nephropathy, also known as IgAN or Berger's
  disease, is a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the kidneys and
  can eventually lead to kidney disease and kidney failure; and
         WHEREAS, IgAN occurs when a protein called immunoglobin A
  builds up in the kidneys, leading to inflammation that
  progressively inhibits the kidneys' filtration processes; cases
  can vary dramatically between individuals, with some patients being
  asymptomatic and others needing dialysis or kidney transplant; and
         WHEREAS, While treatment can slow the progress of the disease
  and prevent complications, there is currently no cure for IgAN, and
  it is estimated that as many as 30 percent of affected individuals
  will develop end-stage renal disease within 20 years; many patients
  also experience difficulty getting an accurate diagnosis, which can
  forestall treatment that can potentially prevent end-stage renal
  disease; and
         WHEREAS, Further research is needed to improve therapies for
  IgAN, and today, more than 30 clinical trials are underway for rare
  kidney diseases, including IgAN; and
         WHEREAS, The IgA Nephropathy Foundation is a
  patient-centered organization that is dedicated to the search for a
  cure for the disorder; the organization seeks to create a powerful
  patient community focused on funding research, empowering people
  living with IgAN, and building greater support for affected
  individuals and their families; and
         WHEREAS, Through their tireless advocacy efforts, the IgA
  Nephropathy Foundation and its Ambassador Program are helping
  people with IgAN to live fuller, healthier lives and bringing us
  closer to ultimately finding a cure for this devastating condition;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize the IgAN Foundation and its
  ambassadors for their outstanding work in the fight against IgA
  nephropathy and extend to them sincere best wishes for the future;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the foundation as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
