R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The Hines Cemetery Association is celebrating the
  rededication of the historic burial ground in Edna on May 20, 2023,
  the 150th anniversary of the cemetery's founding; and
         WHEREAS, In February 1873, Joe and Flora Hines purchased 200
  acres of land in Jackson County and set aside 10 acres for use as a
  family graveyard; they had been born into slavery and transported
  to Texas by Robert C. Hines from his plantation in Hinesville,
  Liberty County, Georgia; the couple lived in Henderson, Texas,
  before moving to Morales around 1864; and
         WHEREAS, Together, Joe and Flora Hines had 12 children,
  including three from her first marriage to Joe Robinson, Alfred,
  Joe, and Tira, and the nine children of their own union, Tom, Bill,
  Reuben, Mary, Jane, Francis, Rosa, Harriet, and Julia; today, they
  have more than 350 known descendants; and
         WHEREAS, The Hines Cemetery Association was established in
  2017 as a nonprofit organization with the sole purpose of
  preserving the historical integrity of the burial ground; the
  association's board is composed of descendants of Joe and Flora
  Hines, and its original members were Sammie E. Brooks, president,
  Beverly Callis Campbell, secretary-treasurer, Hugh Hines, grounds
  coordinator, and Leonard Hines, assistant grounds coordinator;
  today, the board includes Matthew Wesley Plummer Jr., president,
  Bruce Butler, first vice president, Brian Plummer, second vice
  president, Robert Hood Jr., secretary, Rolanda Hood Williams,
  assistant secretary, Farouk O. Plummer, treasurer, and Carl Freddie
  Hines, grounds coordinator; and
         WHEREAS, For 150 years, the Hines Cemetery has served as a
  final resting place for tenacious men and women who braved many
  hardships while striving to build a better life for their families,
  and its preservation is a tribute to the constancy and devotion of
  their descendants; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the rededication of the Hines
  Cemetery on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of its founding
  and commend the members of the Hines Cemetery Association for their
  efforts; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the association as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
