R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, May is Older Americans Month, and this occasion
  provides a fitting opportunity to recognize residents who are older
  for their many contributions to our state and nation; and
         WHEREAS, This national observance traces its origins to April
  1963, when President John F. Kennedy and the National Council of
  Senior Citizens founded Senior Citizens Month, the prelude to Older
  Americans Month; at that time, there was growing concern about the
  number of older citizens who lived in poverty and the lack of
  services available to meet their needs; two years later, the Older
  Americans Act of 1965 established programs to help provide
  nutritional meals as well as health and social services to
  Americans age 60 and above; and
         WHEREAS, Today, the Administration for Community Living
  helps oversee the observance of Older Americans Month; the theme
  for 2023 is "Aging Unbound," and the campaign encourages
  individuals to explore diverse aging experiences and to discuss how
  communities can combat stereotypes; this year's event also
  highlights the importance of staying active by volunteering,
  working, mentoring others, joining social groups, and
  participating in community activities; and
         WHEREAS, The Lone Star State benefits immeasurably from the
  wisdom and experience of its residents who are older, and the
  observance of Older Americans Month celebrates the vital role they
  play in our communities; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize May 2023 as Older Americans Month.
