R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Dr. Sylvia Trent-Adams was named the seventh
  president of the University of North Texas Health Science Center at
  Fort Worth on September 12, 2022, and with that appointment, she
  became the first Black woman to lead a health science center in the
  State of Texas; and
         WHEREAS, A trailblazer throughout her career,
  Dr. Trent-Adams began her work in public health when she joined the
  United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps in 1992; she
  went on to become the first Black woman to serve the organization as
  deputy surgeon general, and she later retired at the rank of rear
  admiral upper half in 2020; and
         WHEREAS, As the U.S. deputy surgeon general from 2015 to
  2018, she was a trusted advisor to the surgeon general on a variety
  of critical issues, including federal efforts to combat the opioid
  crisis; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Trent-Adams received her bachelor's degree in
  nursing from Hampton University and both her master's degree in
  nursing and health policy and her doctorate in public policy from
  the University of Maryland; through her outstanding work as a
  nurse-researcher, she earned the Florence Nightingale Medal from
  the International Committee of the Red Cross, the highest
  international honor bestowed upon a nursing professional; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Sylvia Trent-Adams has demonstrated a
  longstanding commitment to research, education, patient care, and
  public service, and she may indeed reflect with pride on all that
  she has achieved as she takes on the challenges of her new role;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
  Legislature hereby commend Dr. Sylvia Trent-Adams on her
  appointment as president of the University of North Texas Health
  Science Center at Fort Worth and extend to her sincere best wishes
  for a successful and productive tenure; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Dr. Trent-Adams as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
