R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Augustin Ramirez of Austin has brought joy to |
|
innumerable people over the course of his long and noteworthy |
|
career in Tejano music; and |
|
WHEREAS, Known to fans as "El Guti," Mr. Ramirez was born in |
|
Lockhart; in his teens, he began playing guitar with such regional |
|
artists as Cisco Rangel y Los Jesters, Los Latinos, and Roy |
|
Montelongo; he also sat in with numerous rock 'n' roll and blues |
|
groups in the Austin music scene; expanding his talents, he |
|
mastered bass, keyboards, and accordion, as well as guitar; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Ramirez formed his own band, and his 1965 debut |
|
album, El Barco Chiquito, yielded the hit single "Ojitos |
|
Traviesos"; his distinctive vocals won him enormous popularity, and |
|
after recording a number of albums for the El Zarape label, he moved |
|
on to Freddie Records; later, he was signed to a major label, |
|
Capitol Records, before choosing to gain creative control by |
|
releasing his own recordings, including his multi-volume series, |
|
The Legendary; and |
|
WHEREAS, In 1997, Mr. Ramirez was inducted into the Tejano |
|
Music Hall of Fame; four years later, he received a Latin Grammy |
|
Award in the Best Tejano Album category for Qué Es Música Tejana? as |
|
a member of The Legends, an all-star collaboration that also |
|
featured Sunny Ozuna, Freddie Martinez, and Carlos Guzman; the |
|
follow-up, Otra Vez Raices, was nominated for a Latin Grammy; his |
|
catalog includes some 80 albums and such popular songs as "Ruina de |
|
Mi Corazon" and "Sangre de Indio"; many of his compositions have |
|
been recorded by other artists, and the Hometown Boys won Best Song |
|
of the Year from the Tejano Music Awards for their 1995 cover of his |
|
signature tune, "Las Tres Ramitas"; and |
|
WHEREAS, An icon in Tejano music, Mr. Ramirez continues to |
|
delight his fans through his performances and his wealth of classic |
|
recordings, and it is indeed fitting to recognize his |
|
accomplishments; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor Augustin Ramirez for his contributions to |
|
Tejano music and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued |
|
success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Ramirez as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
