R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Bellaire High School in the Houston Independent |
|
School District received the AP Computer Science Female Diversity |
|
Award from College Board; and |
|
WHEREAS, College Board is a national nonprofit organization |
|
dedicated to promoting excellence and equity in education, and it |
|
also administers a number of college readiness and success |
|
programs, including the Advanced Placement Program; the AP Computer |
|
Science Female Diversity Award honors schools that have achieved |
|
either 50 percent or higher representation of female exam takers in |
|
one or both AP computer science courses, or a percentage of female |
|
exam takers that meets or exceeds that of the school's female |
|
population; of the 20,000 institutions that offer AP courses, fewer |
|
than 1,200 schools nationwide reached that worthy goal; and |
|
WHEREAS, Historically, female students have remained |
|
underrepresented in computer science classes, and according to the |
|
National Girls Collaborative Project, women represent just 26 |
|
percent of professionals in the fields of computer and mathematical |
|
sciences today; and |
|
WHEREAS, Providing female students with access to computer |
|
science courses is vital to ensuring gender parity within the |
|
industry, and the AP Computer Science program at Bellaire High |
|
School is empowering young women to build an even brighter future as |
|
they work to become the next generation of STEM and computer science |
|
professionals; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Bellaire High School on its receipt |
|
of the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award from College |
|
Board and extend to all those associated with the school sincere |
|
best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
