R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Chambers County lost a beloved resident with the |
|
passing of Linnie Evelyn Stephenson Standley of Smith Point on |
|
May 11, 2023, at the age of 101; and |
|
WHEREAS, The daughter of Jessie Ralph Stephenson and Ruby |
|
Lena Nelson, the former Evelyn Stephenson was born in Corpus |
|
Christi on May 11, 1922; she grew up as the oldest of seven |
|
siblings, and in 1927 her family moved to Smith Point, where she |
|
began her education in a one-room schoolhouse; she then lived in |
|
Galveston with her grandmother for three years to attend Ball High |
|
School; after graduation, she married Morris Standley on September |
|
9, 1940; they were blessed with a son, Ronald Morris Standley; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Standley began working for the Anahuac |
|
Independent School District in 1945 as a bus driver; she gladly |
|
performed any task that needed to be done, and during summers, she |
|
helped her husband build a 40-foot shrimp boat; having taken |
|
college courses to become a dietician, she eventually oversaw three |
|
school cafeterias; she retired from Anahuac ISD in 1988; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dedicated to her community, Mrs. Standley was a |
|
founding member and an emergency care assistant for the Smith Point |
|
Volunteer Fire Department; for decades, she served both that |
|
department and Chambers County Fire and Rescue as treasurer and |
|
secretary; a lifelong member of Smith Point Community Church, she |
|
also served the church as secretary and treasurer for over 40 years |
|
and taught Sunday school as well; she kept the books for numerous |
|
groups and gave generously of her time and talents to a host of |
|
organizations, among them the Chambers County 4-H Horse Club, |
|
American Legion Auxiliary, and the United Daughters of the |
|
Confederacy; moreover, she shared her knowledge extensively with |
|
the Chambers County Historical Commission for the benefit of future |
|
generations, donated items with detailed information, and helped |
|
tend cemeteries and place markers; and |
|
WHEREAS, Evelyn Standley made a lasting, positive difference |
|
through her wide-ranging contributions, and she will be remembered |
|
with deep admiration and affection by all who were privileged to |
|
know her; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Linnie Evelyn |
|
Stephenson Standley and extend sincere condolences to the members |
|
of her family: to her daughter-in-heart, Linda Vaughan, and her |
|
husband, Bugs; to her grandchildren, Morris Dwayne Standley and his |
|
wife, Michele, Dustin Lynn Standley and his wife, Julie, Davonna |
|
Marie Wilson and her husband, Phillip, John Louis Cionek and his |
|
wife, Janet, Clayton Ray Vaughan and his wife, Tiffany, and Brandon |
|
Cole Vaughan; to her brother, Charles Jesse "Tootie" Stephenson; to |
|
her 12 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; and to |
|
her many other relatives and friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Evelyn |
|
Standley. |
