SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 377
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
recognize Saint Luke Community United Methodist Church in Dallas |
|
|
on the occasion of its 90th anniversary, which will be celebrated |
|
|
on April 30, 2023, and will continue to be observed throughout |
|
|
2023; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Saint Luke Community United Methodist Church |
|
|
was established in 1933 with the help and guidance of members and |
|
|
leaders of the historic Saint Paul Methodist Church in downtown |
|
|
Dallas; originally known as the Saint Paul Mission Church, the |
|
|
new congregation was founded in an effort to develop a methodist |
|
|
church in the East Dallas community; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In the late 1930s, the church's congregation |
|
|
transitioned from meeting in a small storefront building to |
|
|
holding services in a structure they built together; after a |
|
|
fire destroyed the building in 1941, church members gathered |
|
|
for services in the home of a member of the congregation until |
|
|
repairs and construction of the building were completed in |
|
|
1945; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The church was renamed Saint Luke Methodist |
|
|
Church in the 1950s, and under the leadership of Reverend Zan W. |
|
|
Holmes Jr., who served as pastor from 1974 until 2002, the church |
|
|
moved to its present-day location and added the word "Community" |
|
|
to its name to reflect its commitment to serving others; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Once the smallest church in the North Texas |
|
|
Conference of the United Methodist Church, Saint Luke Community |
|
|
United Methodist Church has grown in members as well as in its |
|
|
ministry and church facilities; through the dedicated efforts of |
|
|
its members and leaders throughout the years, the church has |
|
|
developed a global missionary presence, a powerful worship |
|
|
ministry, and a community outreach program committed to serving |
|
|
the people of East Dallas, and it is indeed fitting that the |
|
|
church receive special recognition on its 90th anniversary; now, |
|
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
|
|
Legislature, hereby commend the clergy and congregates of Saint |
|
|
Luke Community United Methodist Church and extend to all best |
|
|
wishes as they commemorate their church's 90th anniversary; and, |
|
|
be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|
|
honor of this special occasion. |
