SENATE RESOLUTION
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize the chess program of The University of Texas Rio Grande
  Valley on its many contributions to the appreciation of chess in
  the Lone Star State; and
         WHEREAS, Since the late 1980s, the City of Brownsville has
  maintained a stellar reputation in school chess competitions
  across the nation; this renown has grown with the establishment
  in 2015 of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and the
  school's chess program, which has attracted world-class players;
  and
         WHEREAS, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has
  contributed immeasurably to the game of chess in Texas and has
  hosted local tournaments as well as state championships; in 2023,
  the team will host the Texas Women's Championship, the Texas
  Girls' Championship, the Texas Grade Championships, and the
  Texas Collegiate Super Finals; the university also offers an
  upper-level course on the mathematics of chess, the second course
  of its kind to be offered by a university in the United States;
  and
         WHEREAS, Under the exemplary leadership of chess coach
  Bartek Macieja and manager Alex Mista, the University of Texas
  Rio Grande Valley chess program has enjoyed great success, and
  the team has retained its number one ranking in Texas for many
  years; the team's previous victories include winning the
  world-class Kasparov Chess Foundation University Cup in 2021 and
  2022 and the Collegiate Chess League competition in 2022; and
         WHEREAS, Over the years, the educators and students of The
  University of Texas Rio Grande Valley have consistently
  demonstrated superior skill and great dedication to chess
  competition, and they are indeed deserving of special
  recognition for their outstanding accomplishments; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
  Legislature, hereby commend the members of the University of
  Texas Rio Grande Valley chess program on their many achievements
  and extend to all best wishes for continued success in their
  endeavors; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the team as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
