Honorable Harold V. Dutton, Jr., Chair, House Committee on Juvenile Justice & Family Issues
FROM:
Jerry McGinty, Director, Legislative Budget Board
IN RE:
HB1310 by Gamez (Relating to detention orders in a juvenile court proceeding.), As Introduced
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
It is assumed that any costs associated with the bill could be absorbed using existing resources.
Local Government Impact
According to information from the Office of Court Administration and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department, there may be a significant fiscal impact to units of local government, especially for counties with a certified juvenile detention facility. Costs may include hiring additional juvenile probation officers to assist with transportation and supervision of juveniles and hiring sheriff's deputies or other court staff to assist with additional hearings. There may be additional costs for counties related to obtaining consent from youth and their attorneys to waive the subsequent hearings. Additional hearings may increase indigent defense costs.
