LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas
CRIMINAL JUSTICE IMPACT STATEMENT
88TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION
April 17, 2023
TO:
Honorable Ryan Guillen, Chair, House Committee on Community Safety, Select
FROM:
Jerry McGinty, Director, Legislative Budget Board
IN RE:
HB2744 by King, Tracy O. (Relating to prohibiting the transfer of certain semiautomatic rifles to certain recipients; creating a criminal offense; increasing a criminal penalty.), As Introduced
The bill would create a state jail felony offense for a person intentionally or knowingly selling, renting, leasing, or giving or offering to sell, rent, lease, or give to a person younger than 21 years of age certain semiautomatic rifles.
Creating a new offense may result in additional demands upon state and local correctional resources due to a possible increase in the number of individuals placed under supervision in the community or sentenced to a term of confinement.
It is assumed that any impact on state correctional populations or on the demand for state correctional resources would not be significant.
