R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The citizens of Houston lost an admired civic leader |
|
with the passing of Willie Belle Mollett Boone on July 15, 2025, at |
|
the age of 93; and |
|
WHEREAS, The daughter of Florine McDaniel and L. J. Mollett, |
|
the former Willie Belle Mollett was born in Beaumont on May 22, |
|
1932; she was a graduate of Charlton-Pollard High School; and |
|
WHEREAS, After moving to Houston, she met Jesse Ree Boone, |
|
and the couple shared a rewarding marriage that spanned six decades |
|
before his passing; they were the proud parents of two sons, David |
|
and Rodney, and over the years, their family grew to include seven |
|
grandchildren, Geneva, Sineca, Tara, Naqusha, Michael, Carl, and |
|
Bernard; and |
|
WHEREAS, A resident of the Sunnyside community, Mrs. Boone |
|
was a steadfast advocate for the neighborhood; she became active in |
|
the Democratic Party, and she held positions at the county, state, |
|
and national levels, including precinct chair and election judge; |
|
to promote civic engagement in underrepresented neighborhoods, |
|
Mrs. Boone founded and served as president of the Southeast |
|
Precinct Judges Council; she also worked in the offices of |
|
Congressman Ken Bentsen and Commissioner Rodney Ellis, in the |
|
Harris County Clerk's Office, and for the Teamsters Union; in |
|
addition, she was an employee at Praxair for more than 25 years; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Boone volunteered her time in behalf of many |
|
organizations, including the Missouri City/Houston Space City |
|
Chapter of the Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., and the Barbara |
|
Jordan Houston Section of the National Council of Negro Women, and |
|
she was a member of the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature; in 2021, |
|
she was honored as a Living Legend by Commissioner Rodney Ellis; a |
|
woman of faith, she was a valued congregant of the Windsor Village |
|
United Methodist Church; and |
|
WHEREAS, Although Willie Belle Boone's passing has brought |
|
great sorrow to those who loved her, her life was an inspiring |
|
example of the good that one person can accomplish; now, therefore, |
|
be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature, 1st |
|
Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Willie Belle |
|
Mollett Boone and extend sincere condolences to her family and |
|
friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for her family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this |
|
day, it do so in memory of Willie Belle Boone. |
