R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, July 30, 2025, marks the 60th anniversary of the |
|
signing of the Medicare and Medicaid Act; and |
|
WHEREAS, On that day in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson |
|
signed the Medicare and Medicaid Act, also known as the Social |
|
Security Amendments of 1965, into law; the landmark bill |
|
established two programs: Medicare, which provides health |
|
insurance to citizens age 65 or older, and Medicaid, which provides |
|
health insurance to people with limited income; during the first |
|
three years following the passage of the legislation, nearly 20 |
|
million beneficiaries were enrolled in the programs; and |
|
WHEREAS, Across the United States, 68.6 million individuals |
|
are currently enrolled in Medicare, and 71.1 million are enrolled |
|
in Medicaid, with approximately 12 million people enrolled in both |
|
programs; as of 2024, there were more than 4.7 million Texans |
|
receiving Medicare benefits, and in April 2025, over 4.1 million |
|
adults and children in Texas were enrolled in Medicaid or the |
|
Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP); and |
|
WHEREAS, Over the past six decades, the Medicare and Medicaid |
|
programs have made vital health care services more accessible to |
|
generations of Americans, and it is indeed a privilege to join in |
|
celebrating this important milestone; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature, 1st |
|
Called Session, hereby commemorate the 60th anniversary of the |
|
signing of the Medicare and Medicaid Act. |
