R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the |
|
passing of Lionel Charles Betancourt on August 6, 2025, at the age |
|
of 91; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Brownsville on November 26, 1933, Lionel |
|
Betancourt was the son of Paco and Mae Betancourt; he grew up with |
|
the company of two sisters, Lee and Betty, and a brother, Frank; |
|
after attending San Benito High School, he graduated from The |
|
University of Texas at Austin; he was subsequently employed by |
|
Collins Radio Company and took pride in its innovative projects, |
|
including provision of audio-video communications equipment to |
|
NASA for the first moon landing; in the course of his career, he |
|
became a founding director of First National Bank of San Benito; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Betancourt was deeply committed to his |
|
community and gave freely of his time and expertise in a number of |
|
leadership roles; he served as chair of the Port Isabel-San Benito |
|
Navigation District and as president of both the San Benito Chamber |
|
of Commerce and the Rotary Club of San Benito; guided by the |
|
Rotarian motto, "Service Above Self," he founded the Adoption |
|
Awareness Project to help children find forever families and |
|
mentored other Rotarians in expanding the program to other areas; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, A man of vision and compassion, Lionel Betancourt is |
|
greatly missed by those he left behind, but they will continue to |
|
find inspiration in his steadfast integrity and dedication to his |
|
family, his faith, and his fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
|
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of |
|
Lionel Charles Betancourt and extend sincere condolences to the |
|
members of his family: to his beloved wife of 64 years, Mary Anne; |
|
to his children, John, Andrea, and Amanda and her husband, Chris; to |
|
his granddaughters, Jenna and Cate; to his younger sister, Betty; |
|
to his sister-in-law, Patricia; to his nieces Dana, Lisa, Rachel, |
|
and Emily; to his nephew, Scotty; and to his many other relatives |
|
and friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Lionel |
|
Betancourt. |
