James Bugg Jr. |
|
|
WHEREAS, The passing of James Bruce Bugg Jr. on August 6, |
|
2025, at the age of 70, concluded a remarkable life of service to |
|
San Antonio and to the State of Texas; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Born in Missouri in October 1954, Bruce Bugg |
|
attained the rank of Eagle Scout as a high school student; he went |
|
on to earn both his bachelor's and law degrees from Southern |
|
Methodist University; embarking on a career in banking, he rose |
|
to become chair, president, and CEO of Southwest Bancshares, the |
|
holding company for Texas Partners Bank, as well as chair and CEO |
|
of Texas Partners Bank; in addition, he served as chair and CEO of |
|
a private investment firm, Argyle Investment Company; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Bugg benefited his community in numerous |
|
leadership roles; a cofounder of the Bexar County Performing Arts |
|
Center Foundation, he was the force behind the establishment of |
|
its Tobin Center for the Performing Arts; he served as chair and |
|
trustee of the Tobin Endowment; in addition, he served on the |
|
boards of the McNay Art Museum, the Texas Cultural Trust, the |
|
Santa Fe Opera, St. Mary's Hall, and the Greater San Antonio |
|
Chamber of Commerce; he also supported science as a trustee of |
|
the Texas Biomedical Research Institute and the Texas Research & |
|
Technology Foundation; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, At the state level, Mr. Bugg received a |
|
gubernatorial appointment to the board of Humanities Texas; he |
|
went on to serve as chair and president of the Texas Economic |
|
Development Corporation, and he was a senior advisor to Governor |
|
Rick Perry on economic and development strategies and |
|
initiatives; in 2015, he was appointed to the Texas |
|
Transportation Commission, and he was named chair two years |
|
later; Governor Greg Abbott reappointed him as chair in 2021; |
|
during his noteworthy tenure, he worked tirelessly to improve |
|
safety, enhance mobility, and redesign infrastructure to meet |
|
the state's needs for decades to come; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Bruce Bugg made a lasting, positive difference in |
|
the lives of countless Texans through his wide-ranging |
|
accomplishments, and although he is deeply missed by all who were |
|
privileged to know him, they will continue to find inspiration in |
|
his vision and integrity; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
|
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |
|
of James Bruce Bugg Jr. and extend sincere sympathy to the members |
|
of his family: to his wife, Alethea Bugg; to his sons, Jim and Tom; |
|
and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns |
|
this day, it do so in memory of Bruce Bugg. |
