SENATE RESOLUTION
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
recognize Commodore John Weldon Koenig on the grand occasion of |
|
his 90th birthday; and |
|
WHEREAS, Weldon Koenig was born September 26, 1935, and |
|
grew up on his family's farm in Black Jack Springs; he excelled as |
|
a saxophone player in high school, and while enrolled as a |
|
first-generation college student at The University of Texas at |
|
Austin, he performed in the Longhorn Marching Band and devoted |
|
much of his time to the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps; he |
|
met his future wife, Nancy Louise Sowa, while completing training |
|
in Corpus Christi, and they married in 1958, shortly before he |
|
graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Ensign Koenig was quickly deployed at sea, and |
|
his distinguished career in the United States Navy spanned more |
|
than three decades and included service at numerous stations |
|
across the country and world; Nancy accompanied him to |
|
assignments in Hawaii and on the East Coast, and he commanded |
|
submarines such as the USS Simon Bolivar, as well as squadrons at |
|
the Newport News Shipyard, before he was ultimately promoted to |
|
the rank of commodore, or rear admiral, and became Director of |
|
Logistics and Security Assistance for the Pacific Command; and |
|
WHEREAS, Blessed with a wonderful family, Weldon Koenig |
|
succeeded in all his endeavors through the love and support of |
|
his cherished wife and his three children, Christopher Scott, |
|
Jennifer Anne, and Andrew Lee; after his military retirement, |
|
Weldon and Nancy returned to Texas, and Weldon enjoyed a second |
|
career in the cogeneration industry before they settled in the |
|
countryside where Weldon grew up in Fayette County and got |
|
involved in their community; and |
|
WHEREAS, J. Weldon Koenig is an esteemed veteran and a |
|
revered Texan, and his 90th birthday is truly cause for |
|
celebration among his loved ones and all who have been privileged |
|
to share in his life; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
|
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby recognize Commodore John |
|
Weldon Koenig as a treasured citizen of the Lone Star State and |
|
extend to him congratulations and best wishes on his 90th |
|
birthday; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
