AUTHOR'S / SPONSOR'S STATEMENT OF INTENT

 

H.B. 824 amends current law relating to the inclusion of civics instruction in public school government curriculum requirements for high school students.

 

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

 

This bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, institution, or agency.

 

SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS

 

SECTION 1. Amends Section 28.002, Education Code, by adding Subsection (h-3), as follows:

 

(h-3) Requires the State Board of Education, in adopting the essential knowledge and skills for the government component of the social studies curriculum for high school students, to adopt essential knowledge and skills to develop each student's civic knowledge, including certain topics.

 

SECTION 2. Provides that this Act applies beginning with the 2025��2026 school year.

 

SECTION 3. Effective date: upon passage or September 1, 2025.
