A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to requiring coursework in economics for an associate or |
|
baccalaureate degree program at a public institution of higher |
|
education. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter F, Chapter 51, Education Code, is |
|
amended by adding Section 51.310 to read as follows: |
|
Sec. 51.310. ECONOMICS. (a) In this section, "institution |
|
of higher education" has the meaning assigned by Section 61.003. |
|
(b) An institution of higher education may not award an |
|
associate or baccalaureate degree to any person unless the person |
|
has credit for at least three semester credit hours or the |
|
equivalent for a course in economics that dedicates equal time to |
|
macroeconomics and microeconomics. |
|
SECTION 2. Section 51.310, Education Code, as added by this |
|
Act, applies only to a student who enrolls in an associate or |
|
baccalaureate degree program at a public institution of higher |
|
education on or after January 1, 2026. |
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2025. |
