A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to an elective course on automobile maintenance for public |
|
high school students. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 28, Education Code, is |
|
amended by adding Section 28.015 to read as follows: |
|
Sec. 28.015. ELECTIVE COURSE ON AUTOMOBILE MAINTENANCE. |
|
(a) A school district may offer to students in grades 9 through 12 |
|
an elective course on automobile maintenance that meets the |
|
requirements for an elective credit under Section 28.025. |
|
(b) A course under this section must include instruction in |
|
and information relating to: |
|
(1) checking and refilling or replacing: |
|
(A) engine oil; |
|
(B) coolant; |
|
(C) brake fluid; |
|
(D) transmission fluid; and |
|
(E) power steering fluid; |
|
(2) checking tire pressure and tire tread depth; |
|
(3) changing a tire, performing a tire rotation, and |
|
repairing a flat tire; |
|
(4) battery maintenance, including the correct method |
|
for jumpstarting a battery; |
|
(5) checking and replacing: |
|
(A) fuses; |
|
(B) engine air filters; and |
|
(C) cabin air filters; |
|
(6) the meaning of common dashboard warning lights; |
|
and |
|
(7) safe working practices in an automotive |
|
environment, including proper tool usage and safe disposal of |
|
fluids or hazardous materials. |
|
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2025-2026 |
|
school year. |
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2025. |
