R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Representatives of The University of Texas at San |
|
Antonio and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San |
|
Antonio are gathering at the State Capitol on February 4, 2025, |
|
providing a fitting opportunity to congratulate the institutions on |
|
their merger; and |
|
WHEREAS, Categorized as an R1 institution by the Carnegie |
|
Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, UTSA boasts a |
|
rapidly growing portfolio of research in cybersecurity, artificial |
|
intelligence, space exploration, and biomedical fields; at the |
|
center of one of the largest cybersecurity ecosystems in the |
|
nation, the university is home to the National Security |
|
Collaboration Center, the Cybersecurity Manufacturing Innovation |
|
Institute, and the School of Data Science, the first of its kind in |
|
Texas; demonstrating a commitment to high-impact research and |
|
applied technology development, the university is launching the |
|
College of AI, Cyber, and Computing in fall 2025; and |
|
WHEREAS, UT Health San Antonio is a nationally ranked |
|
academic health center with six professional health education |
|
schools; it is also a global leader for clinical medicine research, |
|
including in such specialties as cancer, aging, Alzheimer's and |
|
dementia, infectious diseases, and mental and behavioral health; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, In summer 2025, UTSA and UT Health San Antonio will |
|
combine to become the third-largest public research university in |
|
the state; the new entity will encompass more than 40,000 students, |
|
nearly 16,000 employees, $467 million in research expenditures, a |
|
$2.2 billion budget, and a $1.1 billion endowment; its direct |
|
economic impact to Texas is estimated to be over $6 billion; and |
|
WHEREAS, UTSA and UT Health San Antonio partnered to create |
|
the UT School of Public Health San Antonio, which educates |
|
professionals who identify health trends, develop prevention |
|
strategies, and implement programs to address health issues across |
|
populations; another collaboration of UTSA and UT Health, the San |
|
Antonio Life Sciences Institute has expanded the state's health |
|
sciences workforce in the areas of neuroscience, cancer prevention, |
|
infectious disease, and regenerative medicine; and |
|
WHEREAS, The University of Texas at San Antonio and The |
|
University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio have |
|
provided countless students with a strong foundation for |
|
achievement, and the merger of these outstanding institutions will |
|
enable them to make an even greater impact in the local community |
|
and beyond; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize February 4, 2025, as UTSA and UT |
|
Health San Antonio Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm |
|
welcome to the visiting delegation. |
