R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Members of the Houston Lawyers Association are |
|
|
gathering at the State Capitol in Austin on March 19, 2025; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, An affiliate chapter of the National Bar |
|
|
Association, the Houston Lawyers Association was established in |
|
|
1955 to address the needs of Black lawyers and the Black community |
|
|
in general after one of the association's founders, |
|
|
Robert W. Hainsworth, challenged the Houston Bar Association's |
|
|
policy to refuse admission for African Americans; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Today, HLA promotes education and equal justice |
|
|
under the law through advocacy, mentoring, and coalition building; |
|
|
to that end, the organization provides its members with a forum to |
|
|
discuss the various issues that affect their communities, and it |
|
|
also conducts continuing legal training seminars, evaluates |
|
|
judicial candidates, distributes relevant information to foster |
|
|
professional growth and development, and offers opportunities for |
|
|
networking; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, For seven decades, HLA has served as a stalwart |
|
|
voice for the Black community while helping to combat injustice, |
|
|
and this occasion provides a fitting opportunity to honor the |
|
|
association and its members; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby recognize March 19, 2025, as Houston Lawyers |
|
|
Association Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to |
|
|
the visiting delegation; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for the Houston Lawyers Association as an expression of |
|
|
high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
