H.R. No. 439

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The members of the Klein family have made a lasting
and positive impact in communities north of Houston in Harris
  County; and
WHEREAS, The Klein family traces its Texas roots to the
mid-19th century when Adam Klein left his home in Germany to travel
to America; after some success during the California gold rush, he
relocated to Texas and settled with his wife in Harris County around
1854; he bought land along Cypress Creek, where German immigrants
had established the farming community called Big Cypress; two
decades later, the Kleins and other families organized Trinity
Lutheran Church, which was the center of religious, social, and
educational life at Big Cypress; in 1884, Mr. Klein helped
establish a post office, and the area it served became known as
  Klein; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Klein's grandson, A. B. Klein, founded Klein
Bros. General Merchandise in Spring in 1922, and a decade later, he
moved the business to Tomball and changed its name to Klein's Fine
Foods; A. B. Klein's son, Robert Klein, joined the company in 1956
  and oversaw its transformation into an independent supermarket;
today, it is owned and operated by Jeffrey Klein, Robert Klein's
son; through the years, the Klein family opened other businesses in
Tomball and across the region, including Klein Financial and Klein
Funeral Homes and Memorial Parks, and the family also helped found
the Tomball Rotary Club and the original Tomball hospital; although
it had never been platted or incorporated, the Klein community
formed the nucleus of a rural school district, which since 1938 has
been known as the Klein Independent School District; in 1977, the
area inside the boundaries of Klein ISD was officially designated
by the state legislature as Klein, Texas; and
WHEREAS, For well over a century and a half, members of the
Klein family have given back to their community through their
exemplary entrepreneurship and civic engagement, and the family's
legacy will forever resonate across the region; now, therefore, be
  it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
Legislature hereby honor the members of the Klein family for their
historical Texas roots and for their lasting contributions to
communities in North Harris County; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the Klein family as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
