R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Nucor Corporation is celebrating the 50th |
|
|
anniversary of its Nucor Steel--Texas plant in Jewett in 2025; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Established in 1975, the Jewett facility was one of |
|
|
the first electric arc furnace plants in the United States; the |
|
|
electric arc process for melting and recycling scrap steel is more |
|
|
cost-effective than integrated iron and steel production and blast |
|
|
furnaces, and it generates significantly less pollution; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A leader in the steel industry, Nucor Corporation |
|
|
helped drive the shift from refining to recycling as the primary |
|
|
method of steel production; today, it is North America's largest |
|
|
steel and steel products manufacturer and its largest recycler, |
|
|
processing approximately 20 million tons of scrap metal last year; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Nucor recently expanded into new markets in Texas |
|
|
with the acquisition and opening of facilities in Lewisville and |
|
|
Houston; on an annual basis, its six Texas divisions have a |
|
|
recycling capacity of 1.5 million tons of steel and a production |
|
|
capacity of nearly 1.7 million tons; the company also employs |
|
|
approximately 2,300 Texans at the plants; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Since 2010, the Nucor divisions in Jewett, Terrell, |
|
|
and Grapeland have been annually awarded Voluntary Protection |
|
|
Program Star status from the Occupational Safety and Health |
|
|
Administration; moreover, Nucor Steel--Texas earned a Texas |
|
|
Environmental Excellence Award for its efforts in resource |
|
|
conservation, waste reduction, and pollution prevention; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Nucor Steel--Texas has contributed significantly to |
|
|
the prosperity of Jewett over the past five decades, and it is |
|
|
indeed fitting to recognize this significant milestone in the |
|
|
company's history; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Nucor Corporation on the 50th |
|
|
anniversary of its Nucor Steel--Texas plant in Jewett and extend to |
|
|
all those associated with the company sincere best wishes for |
|
|
continued success; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Nucor as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
|
House of Representatives. |
