R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Leroy Nellis has been named a recipient of a 2025 |
|
Distinguished Alumni Award by the Killeen Independent School |
|
District Alumni Association; and |
|
WHEREAS, Each year, the alumni association recognizes |
|
Killeen ISD graduates who have contributed significantly to their |
|
communities or professions and who serve as inspiring role models |
|
for future generations; and |
|
WHEREAS, As a student at Killeen High School, Mr. Nellis |
|
worked a nearly full-time job, and he graduated as valedictorian of |
|
the Class of 1965; he received a scholarship to The University of |
|
Texas at Austin and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in |
|
accounting in 1969; that same year, he joined the Texas Army |
|
National Guard; and |
|
WHEREAS, While working for a large Houston firm, Mr. Nellis |
|
became a certified public accountant; he subsequently completed his |
|
graduate studies and was hired as budget director of the UT Austin |
|
library system; from 1994 until his retirement in 2013, he oversaw |
|
the Travis County budget; dedicated to serving his fellow citizens, |
|
he pursued a dual military career for 33 years, eventually |
|
attaining the rank of command sergeant major; he spent a year on |
|
active duty during Operation Desert Storm and completed 26 airborne |
|
jumps; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Nellis began volunteering as a mentor in Austin |
|
ISD in 2002, and he was named Mentor of the Year in 2003; tirelessly |
|
working to find ways to benefit children, he arranged to take |
|
students to observe court proceedings and talk to judges and |
|
prosecutors; he also collaborated with local leaders to facilitate |
|
opportunities for high school students to earn community college |
|
certificates in information technology, health careers, and |
|
construction trades; in addition, he was instrumental in bringing a |
|
Boys and Girls Club to Del Valle; he has served for many years as a |
|
mentor with Seedling, an organization that supports children whose |
|
parents are incarcerated or on parole, and he further gave of his |
|
time and efforts as a member of its board from 2013 to 2019; |
|
moreover, he has spearheaded efforts to recruit volunteers as chair |
|
of the marketing committee for Central Texas Mentoring |
|
Collaborative; and |
|
WHEREAS, The accomplishments of noteworthy alumni are a |
|
source of great pride to all those associated with Killeen ISD, and |
|
Leroy Nellis is indeed deserving of this prestigious honor; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Leroy Nellis on his receipt of a |
|
2025 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Killeen Independent School |
|
District Alumni Association and extend to him sincere best wishes |
|
for continued success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Nellis as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
