R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Sylvia Rios is retiring as superintendent of the |
|
Laredo Independent School District in 2025, drawing to a close an |
|
exemplary career in education spanning nearly five decades; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Rios first joined Laredo ISD in 2001 as |
|
principal of Joseph W. Nixon High School, and under her direction, |
|
the campus was the first in the district to receive a "Recognized" |
|
rating from the Texas Education Agency; she went on to become the |
|
district's chief academic officer, and in 2017, she was unanimously |
|
voted superintendent of LISD, which at the time served |
|
approximately 24,000 students across 34 campuses; and |
|
WHEREAS, Over the course of her distinguished tenure as |
|
superintendent, Dr. Rios has placed a special emphasis on preparing |
|
students for life after graduation; she has overseen |
|
dual-enrollment programs and early college designations and |
|
expanded opportunities for career certification and military |
|
readiness; moreover, $152 million in bond-funded construction and |
|
renovation projects have taken place during her term, resulting in |
|
new schools, refurbished vocational facilities, and upgraded |
|
administrative spaces; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Rios's dedicated efforts have helped Laredo ISD |
|
earn a number of prestigious national and state awards; under her |
|
leadership, its campuses have received a total of 11 National Blue |
|
Ribbon School titles, making the district one of the most |
|
recognized in the region; in addition, LISD has maintained its |
|
22-year streak of earning "Superior" financial ratings from TEA; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Rios holds bachelor's and master's degrees from |
|
Texas A&M University in Kingsville and a doctoral degree in |
|
curriculum and instruction from Texas A&M in College Station; she |
|
began her career in 1977 as a teacher at her alma mater, |
|
Hebbronville High School in Jim Hogg County ISD, and she went on to |
|
serve as the school's principal and the district's curriculum and |
|
assessment director; and |
|
WHEREAS, Through her vision, expertise, and dedication, |
|
Sylvia Rios has helped countless young Texans acquire the knowledge |
|
and skills necessary to succeed, and her contributions will be |
|
remembered and appreciated for years to come; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Sylvia Rios on her retirement |
|
as superintendent of the Laredo Independent School District and |
|
extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Dr. Rios as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
