R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Andrew Joseph Perez, a fifth-generation El Pasoan |
|
and celebrated artist and multidisciplinary innovator, unveiled |
|
the striking mural Our Mother of the Northern Valley, depicting |
|
Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, on December 12, 2024, and this |
|
exceptional contribution to El Paso's cultural landscape merits |
|
special commendation; and |
|
WHEREAS, Comprising over one million intricately hand-laid, |
|
half-inch glass tiles, this monumental 48-by-33-foot mosaic is |
|
prominently situated at the Nuestra Señora apartments, the Housing |
|
Opportunity Management Enterprises new affordable housing |
|
development on Montana Avenue, bridging historical heritage with |
|
contemporary community identity; and |
|
WHEREAS, The artwork honors the 365th anniversary of the |
|
Misión de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de los Mansos del Paso del |
|
Norte, capturing Guadalupe not as a distant icon but as a living |
|
symbol of borderland resilience, intertwining indigenous |
|
traditions with Catholic faith, and reflecting the unique cultural |
|
tapestry of El Paso-Juárez; and |
|
WHEREAS, Andrew Joseph Perez, whose expansive creative |
|
career includes achievements in photography, video direction, |
|
painting, sculpture, educational games, literature, and |
|
data-driven storytelling, returned to El Paso in 2009 to enhance |
|
and reshape local narratives, employing emerging technologies and |
|
innovative practices through his tech startup, Guide, and various |
|
community-focused projects; and |
|
WHEREAS, The unveiling event of the Nuestra Señora de |
|
Guadalupe mural featured vibrant community participation, |
|
including live music, cultural performances, and local vendors, |
|
significantly contributing to the cultural and social enrichment of |
|
downtown El Paso; and |
|
WHEREAS, Through this visionary artistic accomplishment, |
|
Andrew Joseph Perez continues to foster deep connections to place, |
|
identity, and belonging, creating enduring symbols to unite past, |
|
present, and future generations of El Pasoans; now, therefore, be |
|
it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize Andrew Joseph Perez for the creation |
|
of the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe mural and extend to him sincere |
|
best wishes for continued success with his artistic endeavors and |
|
his contributions to the community; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Perez as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
