R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Residents of Houston are mourning the loss of José |
|
Griñán, a beloved figure in local broadcasting, who passed away on |
|
May 26, 2025, at the age of 72; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Tampa, Florida, on July 24, 1952, José |
|
Griñán took great pride in his Cuban heritage; he studied at the |
|
University of South Florida, and he developed an interest in |
|
broadcast journalism while making documentaries for the U.S. Army; |
|
in 1975, he was hired as a reporter and weekend anchor for KTSM |
|
AM-FM-TV in El Paso; subsequently, he was a news reporter and anchor |
|
for WCKT-TV in Miami, Florida, and he went on to work for the |
|
Satellite News Channel, for WTVJ-TV in Miami, as a host for Crime |
|
Watch Tonight, and as a freelance correspondent for CNN; in 1991, he |
|
anchored and reported for KDFW-TV in Dallas; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Griñán became a member of the KRIV-TV FOX 26 |
|
Houston morning show staff in 1993; respected by viewers and his |
|
newsroom colleagues alike, he later became the senior morning news |
|
anchor; after three decades with the station, he delivered his |
|
final newscast on June 23, 2023; along the way, he also produced a |
|
number of special series reports and hosted the public affairs |
|
programs The Black Voice and Hola Houston; and |
|
WHEREAS, Over the course of his career, Mr. Griñán covered a |
|
number of major news stories, including natural disasters, the 1991 |
|
mass shooting at a Luby's cafeteria in Killeen, and the siege of the |
|
Branch Davidian compound in Waco; he was a longtime member of the |
|
National Association of Black Journalists, and he also belonged to |
|
the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Southwest |
|
Alternate Media Project; civically engaged, he volunteered for |
|
numerous organizations, including the National Kidney Foundation, |
|
the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Special Olympics, and the Juvenile |
|
Diabetes Research Foundation; moreover, he was a board member of |
|
the Dive Pirates Foundation, the Houston READ Commission, and Keep |
|
Houston Beautiful; and |
|
WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Griñán enjoyed the love |
|
and support of his wife, Kathy, and he was a devoted father to his |
|
two daughters and three stepdaughters; and |
|
WHEREAS, José Griñán earned the admiration of all who knew |
|
him, not only for his success in the field of broadcasting, but also |
|
for his exceptional kindness and generosity, and he leaves behind a |
|
legacy that will resonate in the Houston community for years to |
|
come; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of José Griñán and |
|
extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and many friends; and, be it |
|
further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of José |
|
Griñán. |
