AN ACT
relating to a study on the feasibility of this state conducting a |
census of the residents of this state. |
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
SECTION 1. STUDY ON FEASIBILITY OF STATE CENSUS. (a) The |
state demographer under Chapter 468, Government Code, shall conduct |
a study to assess the feasibility of this state conducting a census |
to more accurately determine the population of the residents of |
this state. The study must: |
(1) consider the costs, benefits, and challenges of |
this state conducting a census; and |
(2) identify policy areas where access to more |
detailed demographic information may reduce state spending, |
including spending through appropriations. |
(b) In conducting the study under this section, the state |
demographer shall assume that the state census being studied will |
include a census question asking each resident of this state |
whether the resident is a United States citizen. |
SECTION 2. REPORT. Not later than July 1, 2026, the state |
demographer shall prepare and submit to the legislature a report on |
the results of the study conducted under Section 1 of this Act. |
SECTION 3. EXPIRATION. This Act expires September 1, 2026. |
SECTION 4. EFFECTIVE DATE. This Act takes effect September |
1, 2025. |
