A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to requiring the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement to |
|
study and report on incidents of racial profiling. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 1701, Occupations Code, is |
|
amended by adding Section 1701.171 to read as follows: |
|
Sec. 1701.171. STUDY AND REPORT. (a) The commission shall |
|
study incidents of racial profiling by peace officers in this state |
|
and, not later than December 1, 2026, report to the legislature |
|
recommendations on model policies that may be adopted by a law |
|
enforcement agency that the commission believes would |
|
substantially reduce or eliminate incidents of racial profiling by |
|
the peace officers of the law enforcement agency. |
|
(b) To the extent practicable, the commission shall use the |
|
incident-based data submitted to the commission under Article |
|
2B.0055, Code of Criminal Procedure, in the study required by |
|
Subsection (a). |
|
(c) This section expires January 1, 2027. |
|
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2025. |
