SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 13
|
|
WHEREAS, Proud residents of the City of Brownsville are |
|
gathering in Austin on January 29, 2025, to celebrate Brownsville |
|
Day at the State Capitol; and |
|
WHEREAS, The southernmost city in Texas, Brownsville has |
|
played an important role in the state's storied history; during |
|
the Mexican-American War, a military fort was constructed at the |
|
site, and soon after, it was named Fort Brown in honor of Major |
|
Jacob Brown, who died during an attack on the stronghold; the |
|
area became part of the state of Texas with the signing of the |
|
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, and five years later, it was |
|
officially incorporated as Brownsville; the city also served as a |
|
hub for trade with Mexico during the Civil War, and in the |
|
following decades, its economy benefited from the cattle and |
|
transportation industries; and |
|
WHEREAS, Today, Brownsville is the largest city in the Rio |
|
Grande Valley, spanning nearly 150 square miles and boasting a |
|
population of approximately 185,000; the city serves as the |
|
county seat of Cameron County, and it has built a reputation as a |
|
leader in innovation, space exploration, and cross-border trade; |
|
the city has also demonstrated a steadfast commitment to |
|
sustainable growth, economic development, and enhancing the |
|
quality of life for its residents; and |
|
WHEREAS, Brownsville has fostered a vibrant culture that |
|
reflects the enduring partnership between the United States and |
|
Mexico; the city hosts a number of festivals and events to |
|
celebrate its Mexican American heritage and traditions, and it |
|
works to strengthen the bonds of unity, friendship, and shared |
|
purpose between residents on both sides of the Rio Grande; and |
|
WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to |
|
build an even brighter future, the citizens of Brownsville are |
|
justifiably proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to |
|
honor their contributions to the progress and prosperity of the |
|
Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
|
Legislature, hereby recognize January 29, 2025, as Brownsville |
|
Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
|
delegation. |
