R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Proud residents of the City of Brownsville are |
|
|
gathering in Austin on January 29, 2025, to celebrate Brownsville |
|
|
Day at the State Capitol; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The southernmost city in Texas, Brownsville has |
|
|
played an important role in the state's storied history; during the |
|
|
Mexican-American War, a military fort was constructed at the site, |
|
|
and soon after, it was named Fort Brown in honor of Major Jacob |
|
|
Brown, who died during an attack on the stronghold; the area became |
|
|
part of the state of Texas with the signing of the Treaty of |
|
|
Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, and five years later, it was officially |
|
|
incorporated as Brownsville; the city also served as a hub for trade |
|
|
with Mexico during the Civil War, and in the following decades, its |
|
|
economy benefited from the cattle and transportation industries; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Today, Brownsville is the largest city in the Rio |
|
|
Grande Valley, spanning nearly 150 square miles and boasting a |
|
|
population of approximately 185,000; the city serves as the county |
|
|
seat of Cameron County, and it has built a reputation as a leader in |
|
|
innovation, space exploration, and cross-border trade; the city has |
|
|
also demonstrated a steadfast commitment to sustainable growth, |
|
|
economic development, and enhancing the quality of life for its |
|
|
residents; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Brownsville has fostered a vibrant culture that |
|
|
reflects the enduring partnership between the United States and |
|
|
Mexico; the city hosts a number of festivals and events to celebrate |
|
|
its Mexican American heritage and traditions, and it works to |
|
|
strengthen the bonds of unity, friendship, and shared purpose |
|
|
between residents on both sides of the Rio Grande; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to build |
|
|
an even brighter future, the citizens of Brownsville are |
|
|
justifiably proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to |
|
|
honor their contributions to the progress and prosperity of the |
|
|
Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature |
|
|
hereby recognize January 29, 2025, as Brownsville Day at the State |
|
|
Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting delegation. |
