SENATE RESOLUTION
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
recognize the proud residents of Washington County who are |
|
visiting the State Capitol on February 26, 2025, to celebrate |
|
Washington County Day at the State Capitol; and |
|
WHEREAS, In the early 1820s, members of Stephen F. Austin's |
|
Old Three Hundred began settling in the area and formed a |
|
community known as Washington-on-the-Brazos; the town became a |
|
major center of activity during the Texas Revolution and hosted |
|
the Convention of 1836, where delegates signed the Texas |
|
Declaration of Independence and drafted a constitution for the |
|
new republic; and |
|
WHEREAS, Washington County was formally established in |
|
1836, and from 1842 through 1845, Washington-on-the-Brazos |
|
served as the capital of the republic; the region attracted |
|
substantial immigration and developed quickly, and among the |
|
flow of newcomers were Germans, Czechs, and Poles, who began |
|
arriving in the mid-19th century; and |
|
WHEREAS, Young Texans had several colleges to choose from |
|
in the county, including Baylor University, which was |
|
established in Independence in 1846, and Soule University, which |
|
eventually merged with other schools to become Southwestern |
|
University; the commitment to higher education continues to be |
|
carried on at Blinn College, which was founded in 1883 and is |
|
located in Brenham, the county seat; and |
|
WHEREAS, Washington County is a popular destination for |
|
tourists due to its natural beauty and its significant role in |
|
early Texas history; visitors can drive along scenic country |
|
roads, enjoy recreational activities at Somerville Lake, and |
|
explore the past at the Star of the Republic Museum in |
|
Washington-on-the-Brazos and at additional museums in Brenham, |
|
Burton, Chappell Hill, and Independence; and |
|
WHEREAS, A vibrant gem of the Lone Star State, Washington |
|
County stands out for its rich history and lively community |
|
spirit, and it is indeed a pleasure to commend the leaders and |
|
residents of Washington County as they embrace a bright and |
|
promising future filled with opportunity; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
|
Legislature, hereby recognize February 26, 2025, as Washington |
|
County Day at the Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation |
|
heartfelt greetings and best wishes for a memorable and enjoyable |
|
visit; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
the delegation as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
