Charles Alworth |
|
|
WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times and |
|
meaningful accomplishments remain to comfort the family and |
|
friends of Dr. Charles Wesley Alworth of Tyler, who passed away |
|
on January 2, 2025, at the age of 81; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The son of Kathleen Mary Whitaker and Cecil Dwight |
|
Alworth, Charles Wesley Alworth was born on August 23, 1943, in |
|
Buenos Aires, Argentina; after completing his secondary |
|
education at Badingham College in England, he followed in his |
|
father's footsteps and attended the University of Oklahoma, |
|
where he earned bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. degrees in |
|
electrical engineering; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Alworth taught electrical engineering at |
|
Texas A&M University from 1968 to 1974; while at A&M, he led |
|
efforts to install broadcast antennas during the construction of |
|
the Zachry Engineering Education Complex, and he coordinated an |
|
electrical wiring installation at St. Thomas Episcopal Church; |
|
during this time, he acquired a private pilot's license, |
|
beginning a lifelong passion for flying that culminated in his |
|
receipt of the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award from the |
|
Federal Aviation Administration; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In 1974, Dr. Alworth accepted an engineering |
|
position with Conoco in Ponca City, Oklahoma, and led refinery |
|
startup, optimization, and automation projects around the world; |
|
he authored numerous publications and patents associated with |
|
automated refinery systems and became a registered agent to the |
|
United States Patent and Trademark Office; for 30 years, he was |
|
an adjunct faculty member in the petroleum engineering |
|
department at the University of Tulsa, supporting graduate |
|
student research and representing Conoco's interests with the |
|
school's drilling research projects; he retired from Conoco in |
|
1990, and two years later, he attained his juris doctor degree |
|
from the University of Tulsa and went on to practice intellectual |
|
property law as well as forensic engineering; engaged in his |
|
community, he served on the Tyler City Council from 2004 to 2010 |
|
and as mayor pro tem from 2008 to 2009; he was also an active |
|
member of Good Shepherd Anglican Church; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Alworth and his first wife, Sally Ann Wells, |
|
became the parents of two children, Diane and Dwight; after that |
|
marriage ended, he wed Madeline Elaine Wilson, and the couple |
|
went on to share more than four decades together; a devoted |
|
father, he took great pride in his children, and with the passing |
|
years, his family grew to include three grandchildren, Kyle, |
|
Hudson, and Madison; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Although Charles Alworth is deeply missed, those |
|
who were privileged to share in his love and friendship will |
|
always remember him with great admiration and affection; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th |
|
Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Charles Wesley |
|
Alworth and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends; |
|
and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns |
|
this day, it do so in memory of Charles Alworth. |
