SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 230
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
join the citizens of Roma in celebrating the 97th anniversary of
the opening of the Roma-Ciudad Miguel Alemán International
  Suspension Bridge; and
WHEREAS, In 1928, the Roma-Ciudad Miguel Alemán
International Suspension Bridge was commissioned and financed by
Joseph Erastus Pate and the Starr County Bridge Company and was
constructed by engineer George Cole, who also built a number of
other notable suspension bridges in the area; the bridge was
built to facilitate commercial development and transportation
between Roma, Texas, and Ciudad Miguel Alemán, Tamaulipas,
Mexico, and it has since become an enduring symbol of the shared
cultural heritage and economic prosperity of the Rio Grande
  Valley and Mexico; and
WHEREAS, A remarkable example of early 20th-century
engineering, the bridge is the only standing original
  international suspension bridge spanning the Rio Grande;
although it was decommissioned in 1979, its historical and
architectural significance led to its recognition in the
National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and secured its
merit as a treasured landmark; and
WHEREAS, Beyond its practical function, the bridge
represents the lasting bonds between the people of Texas and
Mexico and stands as a testament to the spirit of cooperation
that has defined the region for generations; it continues to
foster economic and social ties and serves to strengthen the
cross-border connections that are so vital to both
  communities; and
WHEREAS, This year's celebration of the Roma-Ciudad Miguel
Alemán International Suspension Bridge offers a special
opportunity to reflect on its significant legacy and to recognize
the outstanding efforts currently underway to renovate the
bridge for operation as a pedestrian walkway and to protect this
historic structure as a symbol of unity for future generations in
the United States and Mexico; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
Legislature, hereby recognize the 97th anniversary of the
Roma-Ciudad Miguel Alemán International Suspension Bridge and
commend all involved in its maintenance and revitalization for
their contributions to preserving the historical and cultural
richness of the Lone Star State; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
  honor of this special occasion.
