R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The girls' basketball team from Monterey High School
  in Lubbock closed out an unforgettable season by winning the 2025
  University Interscholastic League 5A Division 2 state
  championship; and
         WHEREAS, After dropping just five games in the regular
  season, the Lady Plainsmen claimed the district title and carried
  their momentum into the playoffs; there, the team bested Wichita
  Falls Memorial, El Paso Burges, Fort Worth Brewer, and Argyle High
  Schools to reach the state tournament for the sixth time; facing off
  against Frisco Memorial High School in the semifinals, Monterey
  held off its foe's second-half comeback attempt for a 60-57
  decision to advance to the state final; and
         WHEREAS, Monterey took the floor against Liberty Hill High
  School on March 1 at the Alamodome in San Antonio; with the state
  title on the line, the Lady Plainsmen cranked up the defensive
  pressure, limiting their opponent to just two points in the second
  quarter and never looking back; when the final seconds ticked away,
  the players cut down the nets in celebration of a commanding 64-35
  win and the second state crown in program history; with the victory,
  Monterey finished the year with an outstanding record of 37 wins and
  5 losses; and
         WHEREAS, The Lady Plainsmen were paced by championship game
  Most Valuable Player Aaliyah Chavez, who was joined by Ari Johnson
  and Ambrosia Cole on the 5A Division 2 All-Tournament Team; over the
  course of its campaign, Monterey also received valuable
  contributions from the other members of the roster: Natalie
  Sanchez, Shamari Wilkerson, Aaliyah Luna, Khloei Serna, Zaniyah
  Wilkerson, Ava Longoria, Tri'onna Richardson, and Jasmine
  Holloway; these determined student-athletes were ably guided by
  head coach Jill Schneider and assistant coaches Shayla Torres, John
  Bishop, and Courtney Kelley; and
         WHEREAS, With their exceptional skill and unwavering
  commitment to excellence, the Monterey Lady Plainsmen have earned a
  place among the top high school basketball teams in Texas, and they
  are a source of tremendous pride to their classmates and their many
  supporters in the Lubbock community; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 89th Texas Legislature
  hereby congratulate the Monterey High School girls' basketball team
  on winning the 2025 UIL 5A Division 2 state championship and extend
  to the players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for
  continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  Senate.
